Expat Family ~Like a Boss!
This week, we are joined by Ken Weary, running aficionado. When he and his wife went to Guatemala for a get-a-way, they never dreamed they’d be hit by the “why-the-hell-not” bug and turn their world upside down and hit the road! They met some other expats (families living abroad) and could not think of a reason why they would wait on the adventure of a lifetime.
After arming themselves with research about driving through Central America, safety, school options, income, etc. they became an expat family themselves and now reside in the hills of Guatemala. In the interview, we cover things like:
- their living expenses,
- what it was like to drive from Seattle to Guatemala,
- what it was like telling friends and family they were leaving,
- resigning from work,
- taking a sabbatical, everything!
Whew! Obviously, you need to listen to this interview! Thanks Ken, for loads of info and taking a break from paradise to share them with us!
Show Notes:
Ken is a researcher, plain and simple. So let his work pay off for you if you’re fascinated by becoming an expat family. He kept notes of his research, what their life is like now, and tons of resources at: Sunglassesrequired.com, named because being from Seattle, they wanted to be sure anywhere they travel abroad, sunglasses would be required! Love it!
Also, Ken recommends: Expats Exchange, for research by location on becoming an expat family. An invaluable resource if you’re packing it in and hitting the road!
If you’re a running monster like Ken, you might be interested in hearing about overseas running adventures, the one he kicked it all off with is called: Mayan Running Adventure
