Family Travel = Teamwork!

I’m guessing that a lot of parents, whether they are new parents, or those entrenched deep in the throes of parenting may be lulled into thinking: “I hope someday my family works like a team, we’ll act as a team, and we’ll think like a team!”  I know I thought this myself at some point “B-K” (before kids): I didn’t know when or how this magic was going to take place, I just sort of figured since these little people were my own flesh and blood, some genetic power or subterranean mental wiring would kick in and make it all happen……effortlessly, would also be nice. Nothing could be further from the truth! Families don’t automatically work or function as a team, but the good news I’m here to pass along to you is: Your family can function as a team, it is possible, and here’s 3 tips I learned from our family travels, and why I think family travel is a great way to help you make it happen. Out of the 25+ countries we visited,  Morocco was definately a favorite of mine.

1. The Medina in Marrakesh. “Medina” is the Arabic word for “city center.” We took a 5 hour train from our boat to Marrakech.  My dad had a hostel rented for the night with another traveling family that we had met. So our group in all was 12. 4 adults and 8 children ranging from 1 ½ – 17.  It was a fabulous experience.  As we walked the main square to get to our hostel, we saw snake charmers, monkeys on leashes, street musicians, fire-blowers, TONS of merchants selling everything from leather slippers to moroccan pastries. I literally felt like I was in another world or something straight out of (more…)

Okay, Traveling Can Be Anything.

For me when I say traveling or a trip, I think of 2 month backpacking trip across southeast Asia. No hotels booked ahead. No set travel plans. No mode of transportation. Just us and our packs. With all of Asia, ready to be seen.

But for my husband that sounds like a nightmare just waiting to happen. He sees us stranded someplace in the cold, without a place to sleep and no one around that can understand English. He does have a point. That’s a very real possibility.

When he thinks of travelling, he thinks of (more…)

1.Perseverance!

Perseverance is defined as steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

This is a character trait that I think is lost in today’s child. Hardly anyone is taught how stick with something until you succeed! When you travel as a family there will be MANY situations where you must keep going when you want to give up.  The perfect illustration comes to my when it came to anchoring our boat.  When we started we (more…)
